Love him or hate him, Donald Trump is a force of change, not only in America, but to the existing structure of world order.
There are so many fundamental changes to the status quo that this president has brought about, that this column cannot address them all. However, here are a few of the decisions that Trump has made that will significantly impact the world. And with the exception of Trump’s supporters – who do not make up the majority of the U.S. population – most of the president’s actions are viewed as having created irreparable harm.
The Debt. This used to be a republican issue. They would lambaste democrats for even a hint of raising the national debt. They said it was irresponsible and would cripple future generations. Of course, that was when the debt was used to fund social projects, infrastructure, health care, medicare and social security. Now, the republicans love adding to the national debt to fund their enormous tax cut on corporations and the wealthiest in America. And on top of this, they are now saying that Medicare and Social Security are over-funded and need to be cut back. The question for Americans is, can the nations survive this type of class warfare – where the wealthy are handed the reins to the country and further enriched, and the middle class and poor are further marginalized, with key government programs that support these economic groups being cut? And what will become of the nation when this debt needs to be paid back? Someday, there will be a day of reckoning – and America will not be able to pay its obligations. Today’s republican party is perfectly content to push that catastrophe off to future generations so that they can gorge in the trough today.
2. The Supreme Court. The opening of a justice on the supreme court will allow Trump to nominate a like-minded individual that will make significant changes to American law. Without hyperbole, the Trump appointed justice will take America back to the 1600’s – with decisions that are not supported by the majority of Americans, including: Making abortions illegal, supporting Christian teaching in public schools, an elimination of gay and minority rights, and an abolishment of unions. Vice-president Mike Pence, an outspoken evangelical Christian, has called for abortion rights to be relegated to “the ash heap of history.”
3. International Relations. Trump has turned America’s friends into enemies, and horrific dictators into friends. Again, this is not hyperbole. This is what is happening. Simply take a look at his recent actions and reactions to America’s allies such as Canada and Europe. From trade wars with our closest partners and allies, to threats of retreating from alliances that have been in place since WWII, the president’s actions are not only dumb-founding, but they are dangerous.
4. Attacks on the Press and on the Truth. Trump’s continual steam of unfettered lies should be alarming to everyone, but his supporters don’t seem to care that his daily twitter rants and speeches are littered with untruths. His attacks on the press raise the stakes even higher. With the exception of Fox News, which has turned from a conservative-leaning network to an absolute joke, Trump considers all news outlets that cover his presidency and point out his daily dose of lies, to be “FAKE NEWS!” The president wants the public to believe only him and Fox News. This should sound alarm bells. Again, not to leap into hyperbole, but these are the actions of a dictator.
As stated at the beginning of this article, we cannot address all of Trump’s many heinous attributes that make him so dangerous to America and to the world. Included in that long list is his unfettered racism, and the fact that he is a pig of a man who has repeatedly cheated on his wife with porn stars and others, and in on tape talking about how he loves to just “grab’s women by their pussies.”
When you think about “the best and the brightest,” the people you want to govern America, Trump, along with his cast of incompetent misfits on his cabinet, don’t even come close. They represent the worst of the worst, and are causing America to be flushed into the basement of the world.
Trump is a Frankenstein’s monster of past presidents’ worst attributes: Andrew Jackson’s rage; Millard Fillmore’s bigotry; James Buchanan’s incompetence and spite; Theodore Roosevelt’s self-aggrandizement; and Richard Nixon’s paranoia, insecurity, and indifference to law.
“Enlightened statesmen will not always be at the helm,” James Madison wrote in one of the Federalist Papers during the debates over the ratification of the Constitution. He was right, but he never could have imagined Donald Trump.
